DecentralisationA key initiative in improving the relevance, quality, and value of public services is decentralisation. However current attitudes and beliefs have been developed over decades and the patterns of relationships, both internal and external, between individuals organisations and communities have become entrenched. One area UK government has focused upon is the overlap of Education, Social Work, and Health services, especially with regard to the very young and their families. Working with the CEO and CFO of a London Borough in the vanguard of these changes, Robin mediated between local communities, Health, Social Care and Education providers, and the third sector. He established forums, devised and ran community empowerment processes, and set up local partnerships to steer service development.
RegenerationThe diverse stakeholders' interests involved in regeneration programmes can quickly come into conflict. Mediating between them maintains programme value and releases synergy. When funding for a new inner-city school was in jeopardy because no site was available, Robin designed and facilitated a consultation process with stakeholders, including: Councillors, local resident and faith groups, schools, Council Departments, and the public. Negotiating around common needs he devised a self-funding area regeneration of mutually reinforcing initiatives, including an Early Years Centre; a mixed residential and shop development, new buildings and facilities at two neighbouring schools, and land swaps, that provided the necessary site.
Young peopleRegeneration breaks up the environment that young people use for their social development. Inner city and rural redevelopment often suffer vandalism but meaningfully engaging young people eliminates conflicts and builds social cohesion.Bringing together a team of Youth Development workers, Educational Psychologists, local artists, and local and national job training schemes, Robin negotiated with the Pupil Referral Unit, Police, and local residents. He worked on the streets with disaffected teenagers to devise and deliver a Youth Development Project that would engage and integrate young people into the regeneration of their area.
